The only festival of its kind in the United States,
and one of but seven in the world.
Welcome!
A great festival is lined up – incredible actors, adventurous directors, visionary designers – and one incomparable writer! Six exhilarating productions of seven Shakespearean plays are showcased, featuring original, nontraditional interpretations rooted in highly visual approaches to theatre. Lit Moon will provide, yet again, what arts critic D. J. Palladino calls "an unrelenting window onto the world of theatrical possibility."
This year's festival has much to boast of – the return of Bulgarian "wonder woman" Lilia Abadjieva, whose Romeo and Juliet stunned Lobero audiences in 2006; an all-woman Julius Caesar played by American and Macedonian actresses; the Georgian State Theatre in their first U.S. appearances; a new production directed by Irwin Appel (whose turn as Timon of Athens earned him a 2006 Indie Award); a new production of The Tempest inspired by the color blue; and a bravura acting turn by Finnish actress Nina Sallinen in Poor, Poor Lear.
Don't miss a single production of this unique cultural and artistic event! Come see the world on stage, right here on Santa Barbara stages. To turn Mr. Palladino's phrase a bit: "Open the window! The weather – and the Shakespeare – is fine..."
