Mikko Viherjuuri is one of Finland’s most successful and prominent theatre artists. A graduate of the Theatre Academy in Helsinki, Viherjuuri has maintained numerous high profile positions in Finnish professional theatre circles since 1975.
From 1975 to 1978 he was an actor and director in residence for the Tampere Workers Theatre, considered for decades one of Finland’s best theatres; from 1981-1985 he was Head of the Actor Training Program at Tampere University; and served as artistic directors at two Finnish theatres – the Kuopio Municipal Theatre from 1987-1989 and the Seinajoki Municipal Theatre from 1996-1999.
Since 2000, Viherjuuri has been director in residence and Chief of the Literary Department of the Tampere Teatteri, located in the second largest city in Finland. The theatre is over 100 years old, and is one of the most significant theatres in Finland, boasting annual ticket sales of over 120,000 for its three stages.
Viherjuuri has also had extensive international experience. In 1997 his production of Love and Deceit, by Friedrich Schiller, was presented at the International Schiller Theatre Festival in Mannheim, Germany; and in 1986 his production of Eugene O’Neill’s Beyond the Horizon played at the Tampere International Theatre Festival.
In addition, Viherjuuri has had appointments at such US institutions as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1985 and 1987), the University of Delaware (1989), and Illinois State University, (1998). Mr. Viherjuuri is the project leader of the Find a Fine Finnish Play program, and is co-producer of this summer’s Lit Moon repertory of Finnish plays.
